CAMPING CLOSURES ON NANTAHALA NATIONAL FOREST
Mountain view from Cherohala Skyway

The Nantahala National Forest is closing all camping areas including Ammons Branch, Standing Indian, Van Hook Glade, Hanging Dog, and Jack Rabbit campgrounds effective Sunday, Sept 10 at 2 pm, until Hurricane Irma passes and storm damage can be assessed locally. Campgrounds are expected to reopen Wednesday, Sept 13.

Our highest priority is visitor safety. High winds, especially in ridgetop areas, are predicted for Sunday night through Tuesday night which will make camping extremely dangerous due to the potential for falling trees. We strongly recommend NO camping in the backcountry while the storm passes through the area.

Remember, your safety is your responsibility. Please take storm warnings seriously and don’t risk your life for a night of sleeping under the stars!
