The Blue Ridge is home to a very unique creature that some say resembles a tribe of fairies carrying blue candles through the forest. The Blue Ghost Firefly (Phausis reticulata) is a secretive, hard-to-find native insect that calls our area home, and for a very short amount of time in early summer, they inhabit our surrounding woodlands of Transylvania County.  With our very special Blue Ghost Tours, you’ll be led by a trained naturalist and use the cover of darkness to learn about the creatures that go “bump in the night” at the Cradle of Forestry, while hiking the paved trails to look for our special population of blue ghosts.  Please note: we cannot guarantee that we’ll see them, but we’ll certainly do our best. We may even meet a nocturnal friend along the way!  Pre-registration is required.  This is a rain or shine, family-friendly event!

What you’ll need:  Light jacket, one flashlight per family, bug spray, camera, and water bottles.
What to expect: Little to no light, hiking in the dark, walking up to a half-mile, a sense of wonder, (hopefully) blue ghost fireflies and an awesome night hike!
