Carolina Hemlocks Recreation area is a cool, misty haven under an abundance of hemlock and hardwood shade trees. The South Toe River runs alongside the campground creating a great place to swim, trout fish and tube. The campground has sites available for tents and RV’s. Located in the Appalachian District of the Pisgah National Forest, Carolina Hemlocks sits at 3,000 feet and is just a short drive from Mount Mitchell, the highest peak in North Carolina at 6,684 feet.
Within a short distance from the campground you will find Mount Mitchell State Park, Mt. Mitchell Golf Course, Farmer’s Market of Asheville, Blue Ridge Parkway, Folk Art Center, Biltmore Estate, and downtown Asheville. Shopping is available in Burnsville, Spruce Pine, and Marion which are all about 30 minutes from the campground. You will also find places such as the North Carolina Mineral Museum, horseback riding at Clear Creek Ranch, and other shopping and restaurants in Little Switzerland.
Interpretive and Educational programs are offered during the summer. These programs include opportunities to learn about animals of the forest and all aspects of nature and the outdoors.
Other facilities operated by the CFAIA include Davidson River Campground, North Mills River Campground, Lake Powhatan, or Black Mountain Recreation Area.
