In the shadow of Mount Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia, you will find Beartree Recreation Area. The campground is the perfect place for anyone who wants to swim and canoe around the 14 acre lake or fish for small-mouth bass, trout, or sunfish. You definitely aren’t far from nature when you are on this part of the Appalachian Trail. With such diverse vegetation the campground has beautiful colors during each season, and stays nice and cool even in the hottest parts of the summer.
From within the campground you can gain access to hike the Iron Mountain Trail into the forest and within a short distance from the campground you can enjoy horse trails, nature trails, Mount Rogers Scenic Byway, The Virginia Creeper Trail, The Appalachian Trail, White Top Mountain, Grayson Highlands State Park, and The Blue Ridge Parkway. You may also enjoy the Virginia Highlands Festival that occurs in the town of Abingdon, VA. Campers at Beartree have day use privileges at Grindstone Recreation Area.
Educational programs are offered late May until September. These programs include opportunities to learn about animals of the forest and all aspects of nature and the outdoors. There are also programs with arts, crafts, and other fun activities within the campground.
Within eight miles of the campground you will find the town of Damascus, where you will find a grocery store, outfitters, local dining, and shopping. If you would prefer you may to travel approximately 15 miles to the town of Abingdon, there you will find larger grocery stores, dining and additional shopping; as well as the Barter Theatre, antique stores, or the Civil War cemeteries.
